Orpheus and Eurydice: An eternal Love Story

The story of Orpheus and Eurydice is an ultimate Greek tragic story, which has moved the hearts of many since centauries. It has enthused many painters, poets, musicians, lyricists, opera, directors and writers, who have time and again recreated the love saga of this undying couple. Orpheus and Eurydice were inseparable and they always felt that they could not live without each other.

Who were Orpheus and Eurydice?

Orpheus, a gifted musician, was the son of the great Olympian god Apollo. He learnt playing Iyre from his father Apollo and soon became a proficient player on that instrument. His Iyre music along with the sweetness of his singing voice, could charm wild animals and even cause inanimate objects to pull up themselves to follow his steps. Orpheus fell in love with a nymph named Eurydice and later married her.

2Where does the story begin?

The love story of Orpheus and Eurydice had a happy beginning filled with ecstasy and joy. They were dancing and singing with delight, in the woods where Eurydice stepped on a snake and was bitten by it. According to some other myths the lustful shepherd Aristaeus was attracted to Eurydice. He was chasing her when she stumbled across a poisonous viper and died. Orpheus traveled into underworld for the love of his wife.
He pleaded God Hades who was his uncle with his music. Hades agreed to permit Eurydice follow her husband back to earth and life. But he asked Orpheus to promise that during the trip he will not look backside until both he and his wife were safely backed on earth. The backward trip to the earth surface was quite scary and just before Eurydice could step on the surface, Orpheus looked back and lost her forever. After that Orpheus kept roaming in the woods singing gloomy melodies and was ripped apart by certain wild women of Thrace. His body parts were thrown in the river which floated to sea while singing his love-filled music.

This love saga can move the heart of anyone. Orpheus was a true lover who tried everything possible to bring back his love Eurydice to life. Fate and destiny did not favor the lovers but their love kept drenching the atmosphere in Orpheus’s tunes, even after the death of Eurydice. According to some Myths the spirits of Orpheus and Eurydice end up finding each other in the Elysian Fields a nice place in the underworld.

In the present time youngsters are overlooking the connotation of true love which needs sacrifices. The love filled heart can create astonishing artwork which can motivate the world. The magic of this love story inspires to remain faithful in all the circumstances of life.

What does the story teach us?

This story can instigate any loving heart to cross all the hurdles in their love-journey. It is a most emotive, catastrophic and poignant story of all times. It has a similarity to the story of ‘Lot’ in the Bible. ‘Not looking back’ is a great importance in both the stories. We must trust our love and lead the path of life without looking back. Love is a great strength which can blow up, hatred from the globe.
