Lancelot and Guinevere – A time-honored legend of True Love

Lancelot and Guinevere is the saddest love story of all times.

In 1177 AD this story of a love triangle between Lancelot, Guinevere and King Arthur was written by Chrétien in “Le Chevalier de la Charrete” (or The Knight of the Cart, or Lancelot). This love story has a catastrophic end just like many other great love stories. It has several versions available in the pages of history. This love story acted as a catalyst for the fall of round table of King Arthur.

King Arthur is a fascinating character from the past, as he rose to the level of king from a beggar. He pulled out the sword from the stone and had a round table surrounded with knights and even a wizard as at his clearance. He is a legendry hero who still stands in our memories with pride and elegance. The story of King Arthur, his loyal Knight Lancelot and his beautiful wife Guinevere is admired by many lovers.

Lancelot and Guinevere – who were they?

Lancelot was a son of king and queen but was raised by a Vivienne of the Lake, who herself presented him to King Arthur when Lancelot was 18 years of age. Lancelot was the bravest knight of King Arthur and was undoubtedly the “knight in shining armor” (Until he met Guinevere). Guinevere was the queen of King Arthur, a true charm for eyes.

Where does the story begin?

Lancelot fell in love for Guinevere as soon as he saw her for the first time. Guinevere also expressed her heart for Lancelot and they started their journey on the path of love. Both were obsessed for each other, but the King Arthur was not known to all this.

7Another Knight, Sir Meliagaunt got suspicious and complained to King about this unfair-love relationship. This charge was subdued by Lancelot but later many other knights became suspicious of Lancelot and Guinevere’s romantic trysts. They caught Lancelot and Guinevere in the bed, which led this story to tragically end. Lancelot fought the army and escaped and Guinevere was sent to convent for her infidelity.

So what is so special about this story?

Stories reveal that she spent rest of her life as nun. Lancelot also spent his life in hermit and could never see his beloved Guinevere again. Hearing the imminent execution of his love, Lancelot fought with many knights to save Guinevere, but all that resulted in vain. The love was kept in their hearts, locked and packed for rest of their lives.

And what makes this story so popular even today?

The story still inspires many lovers, and the sad ending may move many into tears, even today. The passion and obsession of these two lovers is unmatched even after centuries. They did not die but lived with the memories of their love. Their love saga transcends the caste, language religion barrier and inspires lovers to sacrifice anything for love.

What is the teaching from this great love story?

Teenagers can feel the opposition of society and agony of love which reflects in the story of Lancelot and Guinevere. Power, Circumstances and destiny did not favor the lovers, but their melancholy and grief finished the round table empire of King Arthur. This sad-tragic story can act as an eye opener for many other lovers today.

And why does our respect and faith for love keeps getting renewed through this story?

True love can enlighten the whole world; it can change the meaning of life for many others. It is a bliss which everyone must experience. This feeling can fill the love in the entire world and world will have no place for hatred. Families must also support love so that the kids do not end up tragic.
